Ensure that your vision is comfortable and accurate at work with a thorough VDU assessment

NuSight OpticiansWorking with visual display units (VDU) for long periods means that your eyes are likely to feel uncomfortable and sore. For this reason it is important that you take regular breaks away from the screen and attend a thorough VDU assessment at least once a year.

At Nu-Sight Opticians, we specialise in VDU assessment and tailor our eye examinations to ensure that you enjoy comfortable vision while at work.

When you visit us for an essential VDU assessment, we will set up our test room to replicate your work station. This allows us to see exactly how your vision is affected by VDU use. We will also ask you about your work station to determine whether other factors such as air conditioning and poor light could contribute to sore, tired eyes.

There are a number of things that you can do to ensure that your eyes don’t feel over-worked and tired when using VDU. We’ve listed our top five VDU tips so that you can protect your vision effectively while at work:

  1. Position yourself at a comfortable distance from the computer screen without squinting or leaning in to focus
  2. Ensure that your computer screen is lower than eye level
  3. Look away from the screen every ten minutes and blink a few times to stop your eyes from feeling dry
  4. Take hourly breaks from the computer screen to rest your vision
  5. Don’t sit facing air conditioning. The air conditioning will dry your eyes and cause them to feel sore while you focus on your screen

If you notice any changes in your vision, it is vital that you book in for a thorough VDU assessment with an experienced optometrist. By law, your employer must supply free eye examinations if you commence VDU use, and also pay for basic spectacles if they’re required.

Our friendly practice team will help your to find the VDU eyewear that best suits you. We understand that eyewear for work will need to look subtle and professional. With this in mind, our dispensing team will ensure that the eyewear fits comfortably and they will give you all of the information you need to look after your eyewear effectively.

If you already wear spectacles, you may notice that your prescription for VDU use changes slightly. Our experienced optometrist will help you to understand the reasons for the change in prescription. Conventional eyewear will not be beneficial for VDU use and we highly recommend that you use a second pair of spectacles with occupational lenses, tailored to suit the requirements of VDU use.
